Reddit wakes up in the S&P 500 — most of the pop is already gone

RDDT trades as an index member for the first time today after Monday's 7.6% rebalance-day fade. It kept about 3.5% of the announcement pop — on a morning the whole tape is red.

As of this morning's open, Reddit is officially an S&P 500 company. The addition took effect before today's session, with RDDT taking the seat vacated by AvalonBay Communities. Its first prints as a member: around $163.60, roughly flat on the day.

The round trip since the announcement has been textbook. Friday, RDDT popped 12.6% to $177.98 on 20.4 million shares — about eight times the prior day's volume. Monday, the rebalance day, gave most of it back: down 7.6% to $164.42 on 11.4 million shares, as index funds did their required buying into the close and faster money sold to them.

Net it out and Reddit enters the index holding a gain of about 3.5% over its $158.13 pre-announcement close. As we wrote on Saturday, the forced buying is real but front-loaded — once the trackers are full, the mechanical bid is spent.

The debut backdrop is not friendly, either. On the wire this morning: stocks lower on rising US–Iran tensions, oil at its highest in over two weeks, and 30-year Treasury yields at their highest since 2007. Our board has the S&P 500 down 0.5%, the Nasdaq off 1.0%, and the VIX up near 15.7.

What matters from here is that the index story is over. Membership brings standing passive ownership and a seat in every S&P 500 fund — but starting today, RDDT trades on the business again: user growth, advertising, and the value of its data. The next catalyst has to come from Reddit, not from S&P Dow Jones Indices.

We will be watching whether the pre-announcement level around $158 holds as a floor. Follow RDDT live in the Terminal.
